Over 30 million Americans experience some hearing loss. Close to one-third of Americans over the age of 75 have some age-related hearing loss according to the Mayo Clinic. The main reasons for hearing loss over time are prolonged exposure to loud noise and heredity. While nothing can be done about some causes of hearing loss, there are steps you can take to prevent or reduce hearing loss from other causes.

Here are five things you can do:

One of the easiest and best things you can do is to wear ear protection. Earplugs can be purchased over the counter for most activities. Shooters can purchase earplugs from gun dealers which are made specifically for shooting. An airtight seal gives the best protection. On-the-job hearing damage can be prevented or reduced by the use of ear protection. Earplugs can also prevent further damage if your hearing has already been damaged. Also, take breaks away from the noise. Alternating loud and quiet activities can help prevent hearing loss. Turn down the music! MP3 players are especially popular today, but watch the decibel level. Loud music over time, especially with headphones, can be very damaging to your hearing. MP3 players can produce sounds at 130 decibels, which is well into the danger range. If you're using headphones and the person next to you can hear what you're listening to, the noise is too loud. So turn down the volume so that you can still enjoy your music when you are 80 years old. Avoid loud environments if possible. If you can't avoid them altogether, at least move away as much as possible. At a concert, sit away from the speakers. At home, turn down the volume. Keep sharp objects away from your ears. Visit a doctor or a specialist. Have a hearing test to see where you're at.
